Overview

North East India is best treated as a discovery parent rather than a single fixed itinerary. Guwahati acts as an important gateway, Shillong brings Meghalaya’s waterfalls and highland character, Arunachal Pradesh adds remote mountain journeys, while Sikkim can be cross-listed for travellers planning a wider eastern Himalayan trip. The region rewards slower travel and thoughtful routing.

Why visit North East India

  • Diverse indigenous cultures
  • Himalayan and sub-Himalayan landscapes
  • Waterfalls, forests and wildlife
  • Monasteries and spiritual heritage
  • Less conventional multi-state journeys

Top attractions

  • Guwahati

The region’s major gateway city on the Brahmaputra.

  • Shillong

  • Plan an Arunachal extension such as Tawang
  • Include wildlife or village experiences
  • Cross-list Sikkim for longer eastern Himalayan trips

Best time to visit

October to April is broadly comfortable for many circuits, but the ideal season varies by state and altitude. Monsoon can be extremely scenic yet road- and weather-sensitive.

How to reach

Guwahati is the most important air and rail gateway for many North East circuits. Other airports and road gateways should be selected according to the states included in the itinerary.

Travel tips

Avoid compressing too many states into one itinerary. Road travel can be long, permits may apply in some regions, and route conditions can change quickly.
